A Circassian who was brought to Egypt as a slave in the 14th century, Az-Zahir Barquq rose to power as a mameluk until he was able to consolidate power and claim the sultanate for himself in 1382, thus establishing the Mamluk Burji dynasty.
His "Masjid, Madrasah and Khanqah" was originally built during (1384-1386) as a school to teach the four major sunni schools of fiqh (maddaheb).
