Urban Alaskan Railroading

Looking back over a decade and a half to an obscure bit of the Alaska Railroad, rarely seen by visitors but one of my favorite to photograph whenever I got the chance.

While there is no snow on the ground in Anchorage yet, the snow line is creeping very low on the nearby Chugach Mountains rising just to the east of downtown. The Alaska Railroad's 0900 yard crew is going about their duties having pulled one loaded gondola from CEI which will be sailing south in just a few days for a date with the Union Pacific in Seattle. The mile long APU spur which hugs busy East 1st Ave for a couple blocks is as close to street running as one can find in the 49th State. Rebuilt GP38-2 2003 in nice clean 1980s 'Alaska Bold'paint was built as a straight GP38 in Oct. 1969 as Penn Central 7812.
