Until Next Year
For one day only the Saratoga, Corinth and Hudson Railway operates revenue trains north from their home base in Corinth to the Hadley-Luzerne 'Maple in April' Festival. Despite gloomy weather, the railroad sold out three round trip departures and was so popular they even added a last minute impromptu round trip ride south from Hadley instead of just laying over an hour during the third run of the day!
After shooting the the surprise bonus round trip south from Hadley and back we waited for the final 3:30 return trip south in hopes of getting sun. While it was in and out it just wasnt meant to be....maybe next year!
So here finally is the last of eight (out of ten total) unique moves I'd photograph crossing this bridge over the course of two days. Bringing up the rear of the final run south and looking right at home are Alco RS3s 4103 and 4118 which were built new for the Delaware and Hudson Railway in Sep. and Oct. 1952 respectively and were acquired in mid 2024 from Genesee Valley Transportation where they had run most recently on the Delaware-Lackanna Railway out of Scranton. They are on the north end of the five car train consisting of a baggage/power car, three coaches and a open car converted from a flat with S1 Alco 5 on the south end.
Arguably the signature location on the line, the 518 ft long 90 ft high deck truss bridge spanning the Sacandaga River just upstream of its confluence with the Hudson River is located at MP 59.1 on the former D&H Adirondack Branch. Below and behind the rail bridge can be seen the famous Hadley Bow Bridge. Built in 1885 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, it is a very rare lenticular truss bridge.
