Northbound Sand

On a smoky morning in the Iron Range CN train S7638109 (Weyerhauser, MI to Benbow, AB unit frac sand train) is northbound approaching the Iron Junction Road crossing at MP 63.2 on on CN's North Division Missabe Sub mainline. Modern day CN's designation for the route pays homage to the historic former Duluth, Missabe and Northern Railroad which was incorporated in 1891, ran its first train in 1892 and built into Duluth proper in 1893. In 1938 the road was merged into the Duluth and Iron Range both long owned by US Steel to officially create the legendary Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railway. Just behind me at Iron Junction the Iron Range Sub to Two Harbors peels off and then two miles beyond that at Wolf the Minntac Sub joins and finally in another three miles the Missabe Sub ends at Shelton Jct. where it meets and crosses the Rainier Sub and terminates at Largo and Cleveland-Cliffs United Taconite Thunderbird North Mine.
