Thanks Rich!

This shot is a signature angle of my friend and talented photographer Rich Hover, who graciously gave me directions on where to find it. Getting this scene for myself has long been on my wish list, and I'm glad I finally made it happen....it for sure won't be the only time!

Viewed from Summit Ave., CSXT train B780 (empty ethanol from Oak Island to the UP in Proviso), led by a UP SD70ACe/ES44AC duo, seems to be floating over the rooftops as it sails northbound over the massive 1222 ft long trestle crossing high above Catskill Creek. Located at about MP 110.3 on modern day CSXT's busy River Sub mainline, the once double tracked trestle was built by the West Shore Railroad (a wholly owned subsidiary of the New York Central System) in 1902. Spanning US Route 9W, the creek and Main Street, it replaced an iron structure dating from around 1883 when the route was opened by predecessor New York, West Shore and Buffalo.

I've been unable to find out its height or who it was designed and built by as well as when the second track was removed. If any of my followers have that information or more that they could share I'd be most grateful.

Here is a link with a story about the original span and an early drawing of that crossing: www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/brcats.Html
