Cresting Crestline
Just a simple little shot from lonely southeast Nevada amidst the sagebrush and pinion pines.
We are at the highest point on the Union Pacific Railroad's Caliente Sub, but this grossly overpowered train with two SD70Ms leading a pair of GEs has had no trouble climbing the 2% grade with this tiny train of just over 1000 ft on their headpin. I'm unsure of the symbol, but despite the warm evening light this is actually an eastbound train as the line orients slightly northwest here at the 5962 ft summit aptly known as Crestline. This is MP 494.5 on the old Los Angeles and Salt Lake Route and is the second highest point on the line bested only by Boulter Summit in Tintic, UT which is about 110 ft higher some 200 miles to the northeast on the Lynndyl Sub.
