Tennessee Grain Train
Something from the way back archives.
A Norfolk Southern Y2A grain train is running timetable north (compass east) at about MP 35.4A on the Oakdale Line of NS' Knoxville District. They are approaching the Knox Street crossing which is the line between Roane and Anderson counties that the small town straddles. Dating from 1888 the former Southern Railway Coster Dostrict mainline provides a strategic east/west link between the former CNO&TP at Oakdale and the West End at Knoxville.
This little town was founded in 1821 as Winter's Gap and was renamed five years later to honor Richard Oliver, the town's first postmaster. According to the Oliver Springs Historical Society, The Oliver Springs Drug Company Building at left was built in1906-7 by Dr. Asa Kelly Shelton, who had a huge influence in town as he practiced medicine for more than fifty years.
