The Coastal Classic

It's two minutes before 10 PM as the northbound daily (in summer) Alaska Railroad Coastal Classic passenger train (210W) wends its way north along Turnagain Arm passing the mile board at 99, just 15 miles from the depot in downtown Anchorage.

The standard SD70MAC/GP40-2 combo are hustling along as their scheduled arrival is less than 20 minutes from now after making their 111 mile trip from Seward on the shore of Resurrection Bay.

On this day the sun rose at 4:22 AM and won't set until 11:39 PM so the passengers aboard have had a glorious terip over the top of the mountains at Grandview and then along the shore of Turnagain Arm and have just a couple miles of shoreline running left before they climb up Potter Hill and enter the southern suburbs of Alaska's biggest city.
