White Pass Portrait

On a picture perfect Alaskan spring day a pair of classic White Pass and Yukon GE shovelnose diesels sit just shy of the Broadway crossing in 'downtown.' The colorful building behind them is the historic original WP&Y passenger station dating from the road's construction in 1898. Replaced in 1969 by a new station and railroad headquarters just out of sight to the right this historic depot now serves as the visitor center for the National Park Service's Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. WPY 98 is GE shovel nose 90 class built in May 1966 as GE pattern GEX3341 with an Alco 6-251A prime mover. It was part of the fourth order of the type arriving 10 years after the first shovelnose came to the railroad. This unit was converted in 2008 into a CLEAR 140 by Global Locomotive LLC with a Cummins QSK45L prime mover. Despite the rebuild these classic units have since been supplanted by six NRE E3000CC-DC units and now all but two are up for sale.
