Montana Morning

Montana Rail Link’s 844 local is working the spur up to the CHS Logan tank farm and terminal beside a ramshackle property just east of the junction at the small yard where they go on duty. Once their work is wrapped up the two classic EMD GP35s, MRL 403 and 401 (blt. Dec 1964 as DRGW 3039 and Jan. 1964 as DTI 353 respectively) will start west out the 5th Sub for Three Forks, Willow Creek, and Sappington and ultimately a run down the 6th Sub to Harrison.

 

The lead they are working was rebuilt on about 4/10ths of a mile of the old Milwaukee Road's Gallatin Valley Branch that served Bozeman and reached as far as Menard. Built in 1910 it felt the weight if its last train in 1978 until this tiny stretch was repurposed.
