Winter Gloom In The Last Frontier
Lets look back five years to another shot from one of the most memorable chases I had in my decade spent in Alaska. Yet another great afternoon spent out with Frank Keller!
Near the very end of March in 2017 southcentral Alaska got hit with its last good snow dump of the winter season. Nearly a foot fell in some places and the fresh afternoon snowfall coincided fortuitously with a southbound freight from Anchorage to Whittier. As a bonus one of the ARR's three geeps remaining in their original as delivered 1976 paint job was on the point. Naturally a chase ensued!
Here is a big 120S with three GP40-2s led by original black and gold 3006 curling along Turnagain Arm just about to cross the pony truss bridge over Bird Creek at about MP 86.6 on the Alaska Railroad Kenai Sub mainline. Far across Cook Inlet toward the Alaska Range the sky glows beneath the low cloud cover....who says gloomy days can't be beautiful? I'm sure glad I got out to shoot in this one. I'll never forget it!
