Lending A Hand

Northbound CTrail train 6402 had broken down just outside its final destination as P40DC 6701 (blt. Nov. 1993 by GE as AMTK 834, acquired in 2005 and rebuilt by Beech Grove in 2019-2020) suffered ground faults and sat disabled on the curve beneath Interstate 91 for over two and a half hours. The two passengers aboard were taken off the train and then management ultimately decided to leave the train until the next northbound showed up. Here is train 6454 coupling up beneath the highway so they can shove into track four at Union Station. After a brief pause detrain their passengers and then load any folks headed south they started right back as a double draft to New Haven as train 6455.

It made an interesting sight with six cars (three of each type Mafersa and MBB) and two P40DCs all in CTrail paint as seen in this view looking down off the Memorial Bridge at about MP 61 of Amtrak's Springfield line above the former Amtrak mail facility where the Fast Mail arrived and terminated daily until Amtrak President David Gunn terminated mail and express business in 2004.
