The Builder At Java Creek
There are three signature bridges that are 'must shoot' locations when visiting the Marias Pass environs. On my one wintery three day visit a long time ago I made sure to capture at least one train on each of them
Amtrak's schedules in the Pacific Northwest had been in disarray for days following the heavy storms in Oregon and Washington. Hence the eastbound Empire Builder, train number 8, is running about 3 hrs late as she sails across the Middle Fork of the Flathead River and Java Creek on her eastbound climb to the Continental Divide at Marias Pass on this cold gray Christmas Eve. This 740 ft long single track Pratt deck truss bridge is located at MP 1165.3 on BNSF's Hi Line Subdivision and was built in 1900 by the Great Northern.
