H53 From the Bridgeview
After two days of brilliant sunshine and blue skies Sunday dawned gloomy and gray. But it didn't matter too much as this was my day to travel home, but before starting east I lingered a bit to enjoy the morning parade of trains while relaxing under the cover of the deck at the Bridgeview B&B.
Norfolk Southern local H53 from Northumberland to Enola approaches CP MARY at milepost PT110.9 on NS' Harrisburg Line, the former mainline of the mighty PRR as it nears the west shore of the wide Susquehanna River.
This local was one of the more interesting trains as it featured four units (two on each end) bracketing a short consist. Here on the head end are SD60Es 6941 and 6981 rebuilt from standard cab SD60s. Interestingly number 6941 was built as a Chicago and Northwestern unit and was once front line power on coal trains out of the Powder River when the late era CNW expanded into the basin. Out of sight on the hind end are an original ex CR SD40-2 and and SD40E (ex SD50) rebuild.
The Rockville Bridge was constructed between April 1900 and March 1902 by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The bridge has forty-eight 70-foot spans, for a total length of 3,820 feet and is the longest stone masonry arch viaduct in the world.
