Provo Switcher

Rio Grande GP9 No. 5911 idles on a sunny Sunday morning at the D&RGW sanding and fueling facility in Provo, Utah on March 13, 1977.

Six of Rio Grande's 24 GP9s were updated with the large, stacked "Billboard Grande" logo. 5911 was built by EMD for the D&RGW in May of 1955 and retired in April 1984.

By June of 1984, 5911 was sold to Mid America Car in Kansas City, Kansas. By July, it was sold to Kyle Railway, and by December 1986, to Railtex. In March of 1987, it began service at Austin & Northwestern. Lastly, former 5911 was rebuilt, becoming a slug by National Railway Equipment, ultimately migrating to the Missouri & Northern Arkansas.
