EMD SD40X Demonstrators

Doug Harrop Photography • July 20, 1977

A group of SD40X locomotives pull UP's ACUW, a westbound iron ore train from Atlantic City, Wyoming to Geneva Steel, pictured departing Ogden, Utah with the rugged Wasatch Mountains.

The locomotives were built by EMD in 1966 as SD40 demonstrators, and sold to UP. All were built on SD35 frames and were equipped with EMD's new 645 diesel engine and AR10 alternator.

Photo was published in the book "Crossroads of the West" in 1998.
