Director's Special in Salt Lake City

Doug Harrop Photography • March 31, 1980

This is a scenario I have always wished I could have seen. Union Pacific has routed a director's special along the old Passenger Main in Salt Lake City from Buena Vista west of downtown. The City of Los Angeles and other premier UP trains took this same route.

UP 960 and siblings are pulling down the middle of 4th West at 8th South crossing with five cars. In less than five minutes, the train will stop at the Union Pacific passenger station at South Temple street.

These rails still exist, although they were abandoned in 1999. Utah Transit Authority owns the right of way, and plans to construct light rail here in time for the 2034 Winter Olympic Games.
