Rare Move on the Provo Subdivision

Union Pacific established trackage rights on the Rio Grande main line between Lakota Junction (Orem, Utah) and Grant Tower (Salt Lake City, Utah) in November 1985.

After that, UP trains rarely crossed the 4,812 ft. summit at Point of the Mountain bordering I-15. A rare exception was on Jan. 15, 1990, when UP dispatched the LUC51 local via the old Provo Main.

UP 861 and 2036 are pictured ascending the 1.14% grade, approaching Timpanogos Highway in what is now the Silicon Slopes business park north of Lehi, Utah. These rails are gone now, although the old right of way is owned by Utah Transit Authority for a proposed light rail transit line.
