The Fast Forty Sandwich
Doug Harrop Photography • March 3, 1978
As I browsed through one of Doug's many Logan slide files, I discovered a block of Union Pacific "Centennial" photographs, taken in Utah and Wyoming. This one stood out as one of the finest photographs I've ever seen of a train in Echo Canyon.
Doug made this photo on Kodachrome film on a party cloudy morning. Typical of this UP era was to "sandwich" a high geared SD40-2 between two DDA40X locomotives. I love the low angle he chose, with twin reverse curves of high iron imbedded in smelter slag ballast. This was the big time Union Pacific we once knew and adored.
