Mission Accomplished
In June of 1987, my father and I set sail on a voyage to the Colorado narrow gauge country. Our main objective was to catch Durango & Silverton's restoration to service a Rio Grande K-37 locomotive, the only one active on the planet. We arrived in Durango mid-day on June 5th, and drove northward on US 550, hoping to catch it. Boom, there she was in the Animas River Valley, coal smoke drifting into the clear mountain air. My dad was smiling wide.
