Blazing Eastward
Rio Grande's Salt Lake City to Denver "Railblazer", train No. 102, rounds a photogenic four degree curve at the west portal of the 3180 ft. Thistle Tunnel the evening of June 25, 1987. The west portal is one of few locations where an eastbound train swings into the sunlight on summer evenings. This right of way was constructed during the spiring of 1983, in response to a massive mudslide which shut down the original routing through the small town of Thistle. The relocation of US Highway 6 can be seen high above the Railblazer, along Billies Mountain.
