McCloud River on the Union Pacific

By early in 1988, Union Pacific experienced a traffic boom, and found itself power short. As a remedy, they short term leased a pair of McCloud River Railroad SD38 locomotives. The units were given the reporting mark UPL for Union Pacific Lease. McCloud 37, 36, and SP SD39 No. 5322 (also leased) were departing Provo, Utah for Salt Lake City the afternoon of April 16, 1988.
