Loading Coal at Willow Creek

A trio of new AC4400CW locomotives work a Utah Railway coal train at Cyprus Plateau’s Willow Creek loading facility at Castle Gate, Utah on Oct. 11, 1999. The train will be delivered to the Reid Gardner Generating Station in Moapa, Nevada the following day. Tragedy struck Willow Creek when a fire and explosion hit more than 2000 feet below the mine’s portal on Aug. 1, 2000. The explosion injured eight, and took the lives of two miners. The last shipment of Willow Creek coal was in September of that same year. (Info from The Deseret News and UtahRails.net)
