The lake's status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest is partly due to the rich marginal mire vegetation found along the southern shore of the water. Here you may find rare plants such as Bog Pondweed, Spike Rush and Round Leaved Sundew.
Wet woodland types can be found at the western end of the lake. These provide a natural transition between woodland and the water, which is particularly valuable to birds
