French Angelfish

I think this is the French Angelfish - Pomacanthus paru. These fish are known to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Florida, Gulf of Mexico, and Brazil. This photo was taken during spring break at John Pennekamp State Park, Key Largo, FL out on one of their coral reefs. The visibility in this photo is not great, that is due to a cold front that came through just a few days prior. The interesting thing about this fish is that it is good for humans to eat, disease resistant, and can be successfully raised in captivity. It is often used in aquariums as a result of its unique shape and colors. It is usually found at 15 ft or less in coral reefs as shelter from nocturnal predators. This fish is known to be territorial but very curious and swims alongside snorkels and divers. This is an omnivore species ranging from algae to invertebrates. Large fish are the main predators of this fish, while they face threats due to aquarium trade. They also control the algae ecosystem.
