A view Of Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Mosque over the tram bridge.
Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Mosque (also known as Mehmet Paşa or Şehit Mehmet Paşa) was built in 1571 by Sinan the Architect financed by Esmahan Sultan (b 1545-d 1585) who was the daughter of Selim II (b 1524-d 1574) and the wife of Şehit Mehmet Paşa (b 1562-d 1579) in the name of her husband.
The mosque is built in a slanted location very close to the seabed where once the Byzantium Hagia Anastasia Church existed. Compared to other mosques, the basement of this mosque has strongest resistance to water.
This mosque is counted among the best and simplest work of architecture of Sinan the Architect.
The entry to the internal court of the mosque which has no outer court is from the North side by descending on the ladders (which is left at the back of the mosque). The internal court is circumferenced by canopies and 16 madrasah rooms behind. The base layout is a rectangle. The dome is 13 m in diameter and the internal cone is covered with tiles.
Two grandchildren of Sinan were buried in the garden where there are tombstones that are of high historical value and also valuable for the history of art.
