Almería was taken by rebel troops of dictator Francisco Franco a few days before the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). For that reason, during that period it was bombarded in many occasions. To protect the civilian population these shelters were built with long galleries. The largest runs below the current Paseo de Almería in most of its length. These shelters had several entrances and were even equipped with an operating room. They have remained in good condition, have been rehabilitated and are currently visitable.
