Observation In Orange
Orange is my favorite color. My affection for this hue was most likely inspired by childhood experiences watching two local railroads.
Five days a week, the DT&I Temperance Yard to Flat Rock local would depart their Laskey Road facility. Living just a mile from the yard, I knew the train departed around 4pm daily.
When I heard the M-3s blow for the Laskey crossing, I would jump on my Schwinn and race down to the Burnham Road crossing. Watching a mix of GP40-2s/GP38-2s wearing an orange dip paint with large block initials made a huge impact on this young fan.
Just a few miles down the rails was my second orange inspiration railroad, The Ann Arbor. Like their competitor, these locomotives also wore an orange dip with large long hood lettering.
However, the Annie rostered GP35s riding Alco trucks. This unique oddity was readily apparent to a young, detail oriented fan. The Ann Arbor quickly became one of my favorite roads.
While my two childhood roads are long gone, a few Class Ones and regional carriers still employ locomotives wearing orange. On this particular day, my thirst for orange was quenched by one of each!
