Educating Enforcers
Like I have mentioned in other photo stories, I have been very fortunate in my career as a locomotive engineer. In addition to operating some special trains, I have also been able to participate in some special projects.
In 2004, I received my Operation Lifesaver presenter certification. I joined this great cause after experiencing my second fatality behind the throttle. It is my small way of giving something back to the community.
Over the past 14 years, I have spoken with hundreds of schoolchildren, drivers education students, and adults from all walks of life. I enjoy speaking with them and sharing my experiences. I can only hope that, maybe, I have positively influenced one or more people into making a safe decision prior to crossing the tracks.
One event that I am especially proud to be a part of is the Grade Crossing Collision Investigation course for law enforcement. This class is held for law enforcement officers who work in the townships and villages through which the Norfolk Southern mainline passes through.
In the GCCI class, officers learn how to investigate a train to vehicle collision at a grade crossing. Our classes have been very successful. It is very fulfilling to receive positive feedback from the men and women who attend.
