#142 David

The Human Family

It was a bright-sun, blue-sky day as Ray and I walked along the margin of the low tide at Bosham. And we both rather suddenly became aware of a man sitting high up on the opposite side of the path, just behind a very tall wall, quietly enjoying the sunshine. We passed the time of day with him, and I carried on talking for a bit while Ray moved back to the water's edge to take photos.

Somehow, I soon found myself asking for a photo for my strangers' portrait series and explaining how I would present it on my Flickr photostream. I received a slightly hesitant, but positive, response. Introductions made, I took 3 or 4 shots with my little Sony, realising that it was not the easiest task to take a shot of somebody sitting a few feet above me. I asked David if he could push back his baseball cap slightly because of the shadow on his face, which he kindly did.

He told me it was his granddaughter who had undertaken the 'editing' on his cap, to make '(S)KIPPER'. He asked me about my camera and I explained that, although small and easily portable, it is excellent, featuring in the RX100 line-up of which Sony, perhaps rather optimistically, introduce a new model each year. It was not until later in our conversation that I discovered David's working life had been spent with industrial cameras, 5x4 format....

David has enjoyed collecting classic cars. He has just one now: a BMW 8 series Alpina and I understand this car is now one of only 3 (right-hand drive) remaining.

By this time, Ray had returned and put this last piece of information into his phone for me, together with David's email address. I have sent him this photo - impossible to show it to him at the time. (And, come to think of it, neither have I seen the quick shot David took of me with his phone!)

We asked for, and received, suggestions of an eatery for lunch in the area, agreeing that 'at our age' we like a little peace and quiet at that time of day.

A sincere thank you to David and I wish him many peaceful sunny summer days.

(I found out that the white stone swan next to David in my photo is not in his garden, the house where he has lived for the 30 years of his retirement being a little way along the road. So its presence high up on top of the wall is still a mystery to me.)
