ONE HUNDRED SMILES

S-m-i-l-e: some of the lovely people who have agreed to my request to be in my strangers' project and The Human Family.

This aspect of my photography gives me much pleasure. I was never concerned about approaching strangers in this way but some of my photographic 'associates' were themselves concerned for me.

.Naturally there are folk who do not wish to have their photo taken when approached by a stranger with a camera. But they are no more than 10% of my total to date and any refusals have been polite, often with a specific reason given.

The accompanying stories which I have requested have always been interesting, often amazing. Everyone has a story to tell:

a 97 year old recounting daring exploits in WW2

a lady garden volunteer with the National Trust

a Wildlife Trust volunteer describing the hazel dormouse

a concert pianist giving a recital in Chichester Cathedral

a French man running a B&B in England

a local TV presenter

a lay preacher in Salisbury Cathedral

an opera singer busking on the streets of Winchester

My portraiture is the most time-consuming part of all my photography: asking for and taking the photos; finding the story; remembering that story; later composing it at home on my laptop.

I find it hugely rewarding, especially when somebody who is self-deprecating about their 'photogenic quality', sees their photo on the rear camera screen and is so pleased.

I always offer photos by email and have often received very positive feedback.
