Great Blue Heron (Grand héron) - uncropped photo
In Montreal's botanical garden, 5 minutes from home, this heron made my day.
It was a beautiful and hot day and I had been unlucky at 2 other spots earlier. Just when I was about to leave the park to go home, I spot a Cooper's hawk soaring in the sky. As I try to follow him, I'm back at the pond where I was just 15 minutes before. This time I see a couple all excited, they are quietly observing something going on in the pond. It is this great blue heron busy trying to swallow a big catfish he just caught (see other photo).
After this 1st meal, he was back on the hunt. This time I take a seat by the pond to observe him, just 10 feet away from the heron. After a while, I see him staring at something and taking the stealth posture...and BAM he strikes again to catch this 2nd good size fish. And boy did he impale this fish!
I never been this close to a great blue heron fishing, what an amazing spectacle!
