Dive point

Kingfishers fly rapidly and low over water hunting fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surface. They are vulnerable to hard winters and habitat degradation through pollution or unsympathetic management of watercourses. Kingfishers are amber listed because of their unfavourable conservation status in Europe.

There are many great portrait shots of Kingfishers, but I was particularly keen to catch this wonderful bird in the dive and rising from the water.

This series of shots was taken in Suffolk using a remote camera set up by pre-focussing on the dive point. Shutter speed was set to a minimum of 1/5000 of a second typically using an aperture of no less than F5.6. I opted for a Nikon 200mm F2 lens which has such a wonderful quality of isolating the subject even at this depth of field.
