Hawk Lake

A view along Hawk Lake towards the monastery with ice still evident along the left margin.

The man made lake was dug out by the French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic wars and was originally named Hawk River by the then land owner. At over a mile long it must have taken a lot of effort to dig out and although now it is on average only around 3 feet deep it was much deeper when it was dug with depths going down to eleven feet in places.

The monks had a diving board in one area that they used for pleasure.
