Robin (Erithacus rubecula)

As I was setting up to fish peg 3 on Linears Manor Farm fishery I became aware of three Robins busy arguing over whose territory peg 3 was. Over the next couple of days the antics of these birds kept me amused for hours. Territorial displays were met with dogged aerial fights in front of my bivvy and over my fishing rods.

Two of them seemed to come to some sort of a distant truce and they would see off the other bird in no short time but after it had gone the dispute between them would start up again.

I placed some feed down for them to share but it quickly became evident they would not put up with each other sharing the bounty so I placed another bit of feed about a yard from the first. The smaller and the most aggressive stayed on the original spot of feed and the larger bird had the other with the third watching on from a distant tree.

It was curious that both birds would turn up at the same time to come onto the feed. they would eat some then both fly back to their respective perches until they were ready for some more. This happened every time and if one of the birds tried to go to the others a fight would ensue.

I dearly wanted to capture the birds in an aerial battle but they were over so quickly before I could frame the shot and I would end up with one of the birds or nothing at all.
