Strongylodon macrobotrys

The Jade Climber - Strongylodon macrobotrys, is a climbing plant that belongs to the Fabaceae family, native to the Philippines, perennial, vigorous growth, up to 18 meters in length and very ornamental.

Inflorescences of the raceme type, pendant, which can measure from 0.30-1.20 meters in length. The flowers are of a rare blue-green color, characteristic of a precious stone called jade; they are in the form of claws. They appear in the spring-summer and attract hummingbirds.

In its natural habitat, the plant grows alongside streams in humid forests or in ravines.

The vine is intertwined through the trunk and branches of tall trees in search of sun.

The jade vine was discovered in 1841 on the slopes of Mount Makiling, on Luzon Island, in the Philippines, by members of the United States Exploration Expedition led by US Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes.

Introduced in Brazil in the 90s, it is still little used in landscaping projects because of the high price of seedlings.
