"Cananéia" is by some historians considered the oldest city of Brazil.
In 1502 the Portuguese exploratory expedition led by "Americo "Vespucio" (Amerigo Vespucci) arrived, leaving the Portuguese degredado Cosme Fernandes, known as Bacharel de Cananéia, who became a powerful figure in the region. Hence the antiquity of "Cananéia".
"Amerigo Vespucci" (Amerigo Vespucci) lent his name to the newly discovered continent.
Currently, the Historic Center of Cananéia still preserves the architectural styles adopted by the first houses from the colonial period until the end of the 19th century.
