IT'S MAGIC -IT'S A MERLIN
Tis the business end and here we see the iconic Merlin engine on the front of a Mk 5 Spitfire . This particular Spitfire is at The Shuttleworth Collection at Old Waden Airfield and is in the workshops for a job or two , it looked like it had just been painted as there were no reg markings on the plane when I took the shot . Hands up all those who would love to hear the singular sound as one of these flies past under full power !!!
The Rolls-Royce Merlin is a British liquid-cooled V-12 piston aero engine of 27-litres capacity. Rolls-Royce designed the engine and first ran it in 1933 as a private venture. Initially known as the PV-12, it was later called Merlin following the company convention of naming its piston aero engines after birds of prey.
I remember back in the 70s a fairly local chap built a Rolls Royce street legal car with a Merlin engine in it - saw it race at Santa Pod , he got wheel spin at 90 mph when he changed up from first gear !!! He went on to build another Rolls Royce with a Merlin engine , this time in a shooting brake configuration . Needless to say Rolls Royce were not happy about either car particularly the grill and emblem being used .
And for Sight and Sound - Merlin the Magician ...
