Kalanchoe

A tiny flower , somewhere between a quarter to half an inch only in size and is a succulent plant . This is the last flower now and the plant had been flowering for the past three months I guess .

Kalanchoe, is the ideal (flowering) plant for people who don’t have much time and/or lack green fingers. It’s super-easy to look after because the sturdy, thick leaves store their own moisture. And yet still it’s a striking piece of natural design which comes in dazzling colours if required. There are Kalanchoes (Kalanchoë thyrsiflora or Kalanchoë beharensis) that are known for their beautifully marked leaves. The best-known are the flowering specimens with double and single flowers which have beautifully scalloped petals (Kalanchoë blossfeldiana). And the tall, slender specimens with flowers like lanterns or trumpets (the Bells range) are most unusual.

Kalanchoe is a member of the succulents family, with 125 known species. The word is a Latinised corruption of the Chinese word ‘Kalan Chau’. The plant is native to China, as well as southern and south-east Africa. Kalanchoes are particularly widespread in Madagascar. The exotic beauty was brought to Europe in around 1930, and bred by German seed merchant Robert Blossfeld, whose name is immortalised in the Blossfeldiana species. It’s a very popular houseplant nowadays, because of the enormous choice of colours and shapes and the ease of maintenance. The plant offers an exotic look combined with the convenience of a succulent which is largely self-sustaining. The Kalanchoe get bonus points for the fact that most species can tolerate full sun and therefore create exceptionally cheerful windowsills.
