Pniewy - The town square
The first written mention of Pniewy dates back to 1256, and the owners and probably the founders of Pniewy were Pniewscy of the Nałęcz coat of arms. It was their efforts at the end of 13th century that the town was granted city rights. In the 16th century Pniewy was already a big city. They had a market square, a town hall, a church, defensive walls and two gates. The urban layout of the market has been preserved until today. The bourgeois tenement houses from the 16th and 17th centuries have been preserved around the market square of the old town. To the western corner adjoins the historic gate-belfry of the historic church of St. Lawrence.
