According to the legend, the name Szamotuły comes from Sama River, which wandered across the plains, flowing to the estuary in Warta. In the area where Szamotuły is located, the river turns several times avoiding the dry marshy clumps on which the city was later established.
The oldest traces of the Szamotuły settlement date back to the 11th century.
Today's buildings located around the market and adjacent streets come from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
