The city Van is located in eastern Turkey at Lake Van at an altitude of 1725 m.
According to the legend recorded in the "History of Armenia" by Mojżesz of Choren, it was to be founded by Queen Semiramis. The city lies in the center of the historical land of Great Armenia.
In October 2011, the city suffered an earthquake of magnitude 7.3 on the Richter scale causing the death of many residents and material losses.
