Rotunda of St. Prokop in Strzelno

Rotunda of St. Prokop in Strzelno is the largest Romanesque temple in Poland built on a circular plan. The record in Jan Długosz's chronicles dates 16 March 1133, but archival research indicates the simultaneous completion of the rotunda and the nearby Norbertan church (the beginning of the 13th century).

 

The building was made of granite stone piles, with later brick elements. To the rotunda, which acts as a nave, adjoins:

- the chancel on the square,

- two little apses,

- high tower

Rotunda św. Prokopa w Strzelnie to największa romańska świątynia w Polsce zbudowana na planie koła. Zapis w kronikach Jana Długosza podaje datę 16 marca 1133, jednak badania archiwalne wskazują na równoczesny czas ukończenia rotundy i pobliskiego kościoła norbertanek (czyli początek XIII w.).

 

Budowla wykonana została z granitowych ciosów kamiennych, z późniejszymi elementami z cegły. Do rotundy, pełniącej funkcję nawy, przylegają:

– prezbiterium na planie kwadratu,

– dwie małe apsydy,

– wysoka wieża.
