Lineated Woodpecker- Dryocopus lineatus. Costa Rica
The Lineated Woodpecker bird normally inhabits the dry forest areas, humid forests, woods and transitional forests. You can also find this bird in mangroves along with the coast side and inland forests. Also ranges into semi-open areas with tall trees, mangroves, and other lightly wooded habitats. The tufted red crest and black face distinguishes it from adult Pale-billed Woodpecker, which often occurs in the same areas. Also note that the white ‘braces’ on the back of Lineated are widely spaced, unlike Pale-billed.
The woodpecker landed in front of me for a few seconds and I just got this image and it was gone.
The appearance of this woodpecker resembles the Pileated woodpecker available in the United States and Canada.
