Common Lime on Meersbrook Park Road S8
Ok so it’s ‘only’ a common lime but I’m nominating it for that very reason.
It’s not spectacular or rare, rather more ubiquitous and utilitarian.
It’s not easy to live with given sticky cars and blocked launders.
And easy to ignore and take for granted as it transforms each season.
It is though a private landscape viewed from our attic skylight.
A playground for mobs of long tailed tits and flitting finches.
It’s uppermost branch coveted by competing blackbirds.
And a launch pad for fledgling tawny owls learning to fly at night.
Our relationship with this ‘common’ lime takes a bit of labour.
We curse the mess and when the dawn chorus comes too early.
For us it is a Great Tree of Sheffield because we have a relationship.
A metaphor if you like of the need to love thy neighbour.
