1967 Tree No 271 - Western Rd WWI War Memorial
Meet Tree 271 - the at the top of Western Rd that SCC have condemn to destruction on 3 occasions.
Its one the remaining 54 WW1 Memorial Tree planted on 3rd April 1919 - "in appreciation" of the former Pupils of Westways School who served or died.
Firstly on weekend of !0th Jan 2015 - a great 100mph storm snapped a middle sized branch out of the crown.
Six months later the Council said it was diseased - that's why it had lost its branch - so "sadly" had to be cut down.
We got a Tree Surgeon to look at it - he said it was fine & just needed a 'hair cut' - 'a trim'
Next the Council said - 'no its not diseased' - its "structurally unsound" and a 2danger to the public" and MUST be felled...
Local residents paid for an Independent Tree Health Survey that found the 100yr old tree to be in reasonable health and (again) that it just need a bit of a trim.... which 6 months later in March 2016 - the Council came & did - this tree that was supposed to be a "danger to the public"....
And now - since November 2016 - its been condemned to destruction for the heinous crime of disturbing a kerb stone....I little bit....
According to International Experts - this tree as with the other on Western Rd still have around 200ys of active - productive benefits to of to its resident and neighbours....
