Sussex, Brighton, Rough Seas buffet the promenade

After Irene's flight from Soames in 1887, he feels disgraced and moves to Brighton, avoiding the mockery he thinks people feel towards him for "Losing" his wife. He journeys back to Brighton after each work day and spends weekends in London at his sister's, a reversal of the usual practice in going to the seaside.
