Bag for an invalid (detail)
Part of my new piece for Ledbury Poetry Festival.
This shows a bag made out of pieces of very fragile old cotton which I have fashioned into an old fashioned carry all. This was a difficult piece to work as the pieces were an odd shape and had to be handled with care.
It is decorated with hand and machine embroidery and an image from an old book.
It shows the choices faced by a young Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who was living at Hope End, Ledbury, at the time.
Should she continue a life as an invalid, educating herself by reading, or should she have a conventional life of a girl of her back -ground and aspire to marriage.
Knotted crochet cotton and an old button complete the piece.
