Ada, Countess of Lovelace

This piece is an attempt to show the essence of the life of Ada Lovelace.

She was the daughter of Byron, and worked with Charles Babbage in developing the first computer language.

The background is acrylic painted canvas, with applied chiffon and nuno felt.

The face is made from stitched and distressed newspaper, which has been painted and burnished after stitching.

This is an attempt to show her deteriorating condition and death at the age of 35 from cancer.

She is looking to the right, or the future, and is enclosed by the mathematical symbol of "0" or infinity. Within this circle I have attempted to show a design which could represent the world, or the world wide web.

The strip on the right is applied jute scrim which depicts the paper strips which traditionally were fed into the computer with the language punched out. The raised dots spell out Ada's name.
