Whispering Crowd

The hum of a whispering crowd

All emotion and no words

The sharp cry in the next room

From a new widow in the hospital

 

The smile of an old beggar

Sitting on the steps

In a foreign land where

All words are meaningless

 

The wild beast

With the broken leg

Who makes eye contact

And fears what you'll do

 

That dream you can't quite remember

But you're so sure was happy

And you just can't

Recover that feeling

 

All the things you did wrong

Across so many years

Where you can almost,

Almost imagine you didn't

 

The times you got angry

When you believed in justice

And your anger made

Everything so much worse

 

That time, how many times?

Where you were told

Your friend was killed

With nobody around to see it

 

The hum of a whispering crowd

All emotion and no words,

Your ghosts, waiting

For you to join them
